Students

GRANT: Student Collaborative Programming Addressing Issues Of Diversity

PURPOSE: This award is a part of President Bernstine’s Diversity Initiative and is administered by The Diversity Action Council. In particular, it furthers one of the Diversity Action Council’s goals: To enhance the institutional environment, curriculum, and student experience. This grant is provides funds to specifically enhance the student experience at PSU. Grants funds can enhance the student experience in a variety of areas: traditional classroom, community based experienced, or on the campus in general.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants are invited from all PSU students clubs and organizations. Proposals must be made up of collaborative teams that may include student groups, campus units, and community organizations.

THE AWARD: The amount of the award will vary, depending upon the nature of the program and the impact it will have on campus life. Selected proposals will be funded up to $ 250 per proposal with a total of $1,000 devoted to these awards for the 06-07 academic year.

THE APPLICATION: Applicants must submit a complete application including the following:

Project Summary: Applicants must include a description of the activities and the parties involved.
Proposal: Please attach a detailed proposal which includes: the purpose and rationale for the activities, timeline, the contribution of everyone involved, and how this activity will enhance the campus climate and contribute to the overall student life experience. Examples of the activities may be (but are not limited to): workshops, campus wide projects, department based projects, or bringing speakers to campus.
Budget: Budgets normally include honoraria, materials & supplies, publicity, refreshments, and any additional expenses. Please include a brief narrative with justifications for each item. All funding must be in accordance with the new State of Oregon requirements and restrictions which currently do not allow funds to be used for travel purposes (airfare, hotel, etc.)
Pending Support: Please state if you are requesting funding for this program from other sources. Be sure to specify the name of the organization, department, or committee, and the amount of the award.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE AND DEADLINES: Email the complete application to the Office of the President’s Diversity Initiative (OPDI) (opdi@pdx.edu) by 5:00 p.m., Monday, November 20, 2006.

Grants are based on available funding. Award recipients will be notified within two weeks after the deadline. All funds must be expended by June 30, 2007.

SELECTION PROCESS: A committee from the President’s Diversity Action Council will review proposals and select recipients. Applications will be judged primarily on the soundness of the program; the feasibility of completing the program within the timeline proposed; the degree to which it furthers PSU’s diversity mission; the collaborations created, and the potential impact on student & campus life. Priority will be given to proposals from collaborative teams which include a variety of student organizations, community groups and campus departments.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Please list the Diversity Action Council (DAC) as a sponsor on publicity materials and submit a summary report to the Office of the President’s Diversity Initiative (opdi@pdx.edu) by June 15, 2007. Also, grant recipients are required to give a poster presentation of their project at the Spring Diversity Awards Ceremony scheduled for April 26, 2007.

Faculty - Application Guidelines

GRANT: Faculty Scholarship Addressing Issues Of Diversity

PURPOSE: This award is administered by the Diversity Action Council in support of President Bernstine’s Diversity Initiative. In particular, it furthers one of the Diversity Action Council’s goals: To enhance the institutional environment, curriculum, and faculty scholarship for diversity. Recipients are expected to share their expertise and contribute to a body of literature as well as share their findings on campus.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants are invited from all PSU faculty, staff, and departments.

THE AWARD: The amount of the award will vary, depending upon the nature of the research proposed and the number of meritorious applications received. Selected proposals will be funded up to $2000 per proposal with a total of $6,000 devoted to these awards.

THE APPLICATION: Applicants must submit a complete application including the following:

Project Summary: Applicants must include a non-technical abstract of the research or project (limited to 200 words or less).
Proposal: (limited to five double spaced pages). The proposal should include the following: the purpose and rationale for the project, the project design and timeframe, evidence of applicants’ abilities to carry out the project, how the project’s research is directly related to diversity, and how this work will contribute to the field of study related to diversity.
Budget: Award funds may be used for research materials, research assistants, or other purposes directly related to the scholarly activity. All funding must be in accordance with the new State of Oregon requirements and restrictions. According to the Oregon requirements, travel will only be funded for peer reviewed conference presentations. Budgets normally include personnel, services, and supplies with narrative justifications for each item. Similarly, the activities and role of research assistants must be detailed and clearly justified in this section.

Broad ranges of items are intended to be funded. However, the following items will only be funded in exceptional circumstances and must be clearly justified as crucial for the execution of the research project: 1) Computer hardware; 2) Release time; 3) Summer salary.
Pending Support: Please state if you are requesting funding for this project from other sources. Be sure to specify the name of the granting agency, and the amount of the award.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE AND DEADLINES: Email the complete application to the Office of the President’s Diversity Initiative (OPDI) (opdi@pdx.edu) by 5:00 p.m., Monday, November 20, 2006. Funding will be released early December 2006 and must be expended by June 30, 2007.

SELECTION PROCESS: A committee from the President’s Diversity Action Council will choose all proposals. Applications will be judged primarily on the soundness of the project and project design; the feasibility of completing the project within the timeframe proposed; the qualifications of the applicant(s); and the relationship to “diversity”. Special consideration will be given to the projects that address the diversity issues related to PSU’s campus climate and curriculum development.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Principal investigators are required to submit a progress report to the Office of the President’s Diversity Initiative (opdi@pdx.edu) by June 15, 2007. The report should include

  1. Project Summary (Double spaced 1 page)
  2. Detailed description of the activities
  3. Results of the project
  4. Key challenges and accomplishments and
  5. Next steps.
Also, grant recipients are required to give a poster presentation of their projects at the Spring Diversity Awards Ceremony scheduled for April 26, 2007. An annual report highlighting the accomplishments of the research teams during the funding period may be published in the Diversity Action Council Newsletter. If research involves the use of human subjects, a copy of the PSU Human Subjects Research Review Committee approval letter needs to be submitted together with the progress report.
